Wire Sculpture Workshop with Priscilla Edwards

Wednesday March 2nd was an action packed day for GTAG members. Entries for  the Carol Brown Award were submitted for judging by Priscilla Edwards.

Carol was an active member of the Grassington and District Branch until her death in 2019. She held the position of Chairman for over ten of those years and had a role on the committee for over fifteen years. Carol was an inspiration for many, and we hope that the Grassington Textile Arts Group will continue for at least another 30 years on the foundation that Carol lay down for us: inspiration, indulgence, inventiveness, imagination and incentive, which in turn leads to motivation and creativity.

The "Carol Brown Award" was set up in memory of her long-standing service to our group.

This is an annual competition for the Grassington Textile Arts Group, to be judged on a piece of work inspired by something seen at a meeting in the year of the award.

Congratulations to Liz for her Jessica Grady's inspired, stunning, winning piece. Priscilla particularly liked how it moved when she picked it up and this clinched it as the winner in her opinion.

I have included a few examples of other pieces in the Carol Brown Competition.

What fantastic, varied, imaginative and creative pieces.

The main event of the day was the Wire Sculpture Workshop with Priscilla Edwards. Armed with aprons, pliers, wire cutters, sewing threads, scraps of lace, silk scarves, broken jewelry and a wax pot, the artistic inspirations began.

Priscilla explained how to create a  frame work and then embellish with paper and fabric.

An absolutely fabulous day of textile art and a big thank you to Priscilla for sharing her techniques with us.

The final activity of the day was to swap our "Travelling Pages" with each other. After the success of the "Travelling Books", and a discussion at the last meeting, members expressed an interest in starting another of these projects. Any member of the group could make a unique contribution to a member's final book, by producing a page of textile art each month. This was then swapped with another member's page. The topic for each month was the actual month itself, this week we were to swap our "February" pages. At the end of the journey, each participating member would be able to produce a book containing wonderful keepsakes and memories of our friendships in this Textile Group.

Start preparing for your "March" contributions!
