July 20th - Richard Box Workshop

GTAG (Grassington Textiles Arts Group) were fortunate in having Richard Box come to the Dales to give his "Daisy" workshop to our members this week.

Richard Box, textiles artist, painter, embroiderer, teacher, lecturer, author, art historian, and a regular exhibitor and demonstrator, originally trained as a painter. He uses this training to build up rich surfaces in his sumptuous textile artwork and fabric collage. The collages are then over laid with free machine stitch and finally finished with extensive hand stitching.

Richard provided a kit for each student which comprised all the fabric, threads, patterns, and instructions to complete the days project. His attention to detail must be commended. Richard's teaching ability in making techniques clear and understandable for those of us who were completely new to this type of textile art was very much appreciated.

It was a fabulous workshop and some wonderful sample pieces were produced in the day, to be completed at home with hand stitch.

July 6th - "Exploring and Developing Concepts" a talk from Sally Wilson

 

We were entertained and amused by an inspirational speaker today.

In her unprepossessing way, Sally Wilson told us the story of her early arts training, her years spent working in arts education, and how everything was almost taken away by a serious accident.

She recounted various stages of her recovery in such limited detail that one could only guess at the challenges she has had to face.

But it was after Sally's talk, when we got to look closely at her work, that we could really see what beautiful, detailed, diligent results her recovered talent has achieved.
