What a fabulous visit we had to the Leeds Library to see "The Leeds Tapestry".
The 16 panels of needlework, each 8 feet high by 4 feet wide, and each containing an aspect of Leeds life, are made up of many individual embroideries, 1500 in all, sewn in a wide variety of stitches. The photos illustrate just a tiny sample of the individual embroideries.
It was conceived and directed by Leeds textile artist Kate Russell and provides a vision of the City of Leeds at the turn of the Millennium.
Kate writes " One of the fundamental aims of this project was to involve people from all sectors, from all walks of life, in the whole range of creative processes: consultation, research, design, fund-raising and production. Another intention was to reveal the creative potential of a wide variety of textile techniques from the everyday to the innovative."
The work is awe inspiring.
The friendly staff at the Library gave a very thorough and knowledgeable talk about the panels and completed our visit with a super stitch workshop. I can certainly recommend a visit to see the Tapestry.
